created by Mrs. Guest-emotionsWhat is a Tesselation?

Have you every held or seen a honeycomb? Think about all of the hexagons repeated in a natural pattern created by bees. There are no gaps nor overlaps. A very effecient method of storing honey. A tessellation is created when a shape is repeated over and over again covering a plane without any gaps or overlaps. Not all shapes tesselate. We create tesselations during second semester Introduction to Art to explore pattern and design.

Tesselations are all about transformations. A rotation transfomation represents a turn. A complete turn is 360 degrees, just like the amount of turn in a circle. A reflection transformation represents a flip across the x and or y axis. Sometimes we see this as a mirror image. Slide or translation is a translation that moves a certain value to the left or right. It is simply slid across the page.
